Shades of Kay - Here We Go ⁑

Hey, it’s me! Welcome to my cozy little corner of the internet.

In this blog, I’ll combine my career as a hairstylist with the other things that I love in life. You’ll read all about my product recommendations, hair care and styling tips with a side order of my favourite books, crazy thoughts, favourite recipes and every thing in between. :

The Aspiring Space Explorer Turned Hair Artist ⏾

I wish I had a super inspiring story about how I knew from a young age that I was destined to become a hairstylist - but that’s not really the case. I wanted to be an astronaut. My dreams of walking on the moon quickly vanished as I got older, drifting into dreams of becoming a famous singer or an artist. That clearly didn’t really pan out either. My singing is saved for the car rides home from work and my fine art skills involve small DIY’s or crafting for my eyes only.

I took the first five years after high school to figure out who I was and what I wanted out of life - but mostly to just have fun. In 2018, I decided to leave my hometown of Swift Current and finally go to hair school in Regina, that’s when everything really ‘clicked’. I had originally enrolled into hair school just as a ‘back up plan’. Once I was able to be creative in the form of hair artistry and create friendships and relationships with clients, colleagues and network in the hair community, I truly realized that this was what I was meant to do.

While being creative completely fuels my soul, this career has brought me friendships and relationships that are the reason for my love of being a hairstylist. The honour of laughing with you, crying with you, and being a part of your life brings me an unmatched level of joy - making your hair FABULOUS is just an extra perk.

The Hair Enthusiast

I’m obsessed with your hair, and I know you are too! In this blog, I’ll focus on all things hair, including:

  • My Product Recommendations: I get it. There are SO many different products types, product lines and ingredients out there and it can be so overwhelming. Not to mention, we all have different hair types and different needs. When it comes to hair, one size does NOT fit all. I’ll address my recommendations for different hair types and let you know what’s up.

  • Hair Health Focus: We. Want. Healthy. Hair! There are so many ways that we can optimize the health of our hair, and I’d love to share it all with you.

  • Styling Tips and Tricks: Sometimes it is tricky to learn all of these different techniques of curling , braiding, styling, pinning and blow drying your hair. I’ve always been the kind of person to stick to ONE style forever, but it can be fun to learn different ways to style your hair to switch things up.

  • Haircuts, Colours and Styles That I’m Obsessed With:  Hair cuts, colour and style trends are forever changing - so I’ll debrief my faves once in a while to keep you in the loop of trending styles that I love and.. ones that I don’t love so much.

I’ll chat more about these topics in my future blog posts - there’s no gatekeeping here.

In The Life

When I’m not surrounded by the sound of hair dryers and the luscious lather of shampoo, I enjoy my quiet life at home. I’m always curled up with a candle or two, a good book, great snacks and good music. Quintessential Taurus behaviour, amiright?

If you’ve ever sat in my chair at the salon, or if you are a friend of mine (or my husband that has no choice but to listen), there is a 99% chance I’ve talked your ear off about the book that I’m reading that day at that moment. While my interests in books typically include any horror or thriller, I try to expand my book content into other genres as well. Unless it’s some fluffy romance novel.. I’ve got no recommendations for you there. I always joke that I’m addicting to reading books that give me anxiety, but it really is the truth.

I’ll always keep up to date on the newest reality TV series as well - Bravo, Netflix, whatever. Trash TV isn’t for everyone, but there really is something truly fascinating about watching other people’s drama. Like, why is that?

I’m so blessed with my little life - I’ve got the most wonderful husband, the SWEETEST black cat named Rocky, the SILLIEST Bug (boxer-pug) named Leo, and a life enriched with supportive and inspiring friends and family.

Thanks For Being Here

I’m more than just books and television, I swear. I’m just here to yap about hair, life things, and create a space that I can try to entertain you with a four minute read.

Thanks for being here! Stick around - I promise it’ll be a mix of inspiration, real talk, and just enough grit to keep things interesting.

Until next time,

Kay xx
